1776 - 1820     10th Earl: John Bowes (1769–1820) son of 9th Earl and Mary Eleanor

On the 10th Earl's death, his brother challenged the succession to the earldom and won, so the Earl's son, aged 9 at the time of his death, was prevented from inheriting the title and the Scottish properties.

1972 – 1987    17th Earl: Fergus Michael Claude Bowes-Lyon (1928–1987) first cousin of the 16th Earl, grandson of the 14th Earl, who signed over the Chapel to the National Trust in 1974.
